My time in Cornwall was the best of my life. I experienced all the best elements of life with Mrs Hendricks, being part of a family, being cared for. But I also adored the environment and felt part of the little community. Alice’s friends became my friends. I found a job at one of the two pubs, which I enjoyed, and even though the cottages were quieter in the off season, there was still plenty to do on the farm to justify my board and lodging with Alice’s parents.

Alice wrote letters regularly. The tour was progressing well. Ticket sales remained strong, as did the reviews. Jonathan apparently rallied from the dual blows of his past catching up with him and my abandonment of him in his hour of need. He had, according to Alice, found solace in the arms of a girl from the ensemble.

Most of the seasonal staff were long gone, so it was really just me and Alice’s parents in the farmhouse. Not that I minded. They treated me like their own family, took me in based purely on the word of their daughter. It was perfect. And yet, if I’m honest, I had noticed a few peculiarities in their behaviour. Of course, I ignored this until it was too late, because I had the life I thought I deserved.

I’ve thought about it a lot since. It was Alice’s father, Frank, who was the point of origin for the oddness. He seemed increasingly confused as to who I was, often referring to me as Annie, his dead sister. I put it down to the pressure of running the family business. At first, I didn’t think much of it and decided I’d only noticed a difference because there were fewer people about. But I did feel less at ease.

I recall the morning I first admitted to myself there might be a problem. I had wandered down for breakfast early. I was supposed to help Paul, the groundsman, dig up some of the lawns to create more parking for next season. He let me operate the small digger he’d hired for the job, which was brilliant fun.

It was only just getting light. I flicked on the kitchen lights and dropped two slices of bread into the toaster. There was still a glow from the coal fire, and the room was pleasantly warm despite the early hour. It was raining and I knew it would be cold outside, so I took my toast and stood as close as I was able to the remains of the fire.

The kitchen door burst open with such force that the handle hit the wall and the door ricocheted back. I jumped, dropping the remains of my toast into the coal dust at my feet.

It was Alice’s father, in his pyjamas, hair as wild as his eyes.

‘Has someone been here?’ he demanded loudly.

‘Morning, Frank,’ I managed. ‘You startled me. Everything okay?’

‘Annie was someone here?’ he asked again.

I wondered if he was dreaming, perhaps sleepwalking. I hadn’t noticed him do it before, but that didn’t mean it hadn’t happened.
